“Count Your Blessings””

Do you take time to count your blessings? It's an old phrase. Maybe it sounds a bit corny or "cheesy." When I was young, in Sunday School, I remember singing songs to that effect. When I think of the phrase, “count your blessings,” my mind automatically shifts to an old grandmother, sitting in a rocking chair with some type of needlework project on her lap. Yet, the older I get, the more I realize the wisdom hidden in this phrase: “Count your blessings.”

As I sit at home (with a Midwestern thunderstorm rolling through this evening) listening to my children’s silly banter filling the kitchen with noise and laughter, I am reminded that I have much to be thankful for. In life, it’s easy to see what other people have and to be envious or jealous. I consider myself a very competitive person…but it wasn’t until recently that I could be competitive without constantly comparing myself with others.

Am I as fit as him?

Is my car as nice as their car?

Do my kids excel in their activities like those kids?

But…that’s not really the point, is it?

Reader, do you take time to sit and list, remember, and remind yourself of some of the things you have to be grateful for? If not, you should start. If you do, you should remind me to continue to do it also.

This Sunday in worship, we will once again be reminded of “Jesus Christ, the Bread of Life.” Jesus satisfies our needs. Jesus can assuage all manner of hungers. God is there for us. We can always find someone who has a bigger house, greener grass, or a newer car…but Scripture teaches us to, “Seek first God’s kingdom and his righteousness.” Will you take the opportunity today to count your blessings and give thanks to God? I’m trying to do the same. Blessings on your week, and I hope to see you soon.

Counting you as a blessing,
