World News and media bring the realities of our global community to my attention and my new feed. We watch the impacts of storms across the country and armed conflict around the world. Yet, so much of my attention focuses on a much smaller area of the world: my home, my family, me. In between the global and grand and the small and self-interest, exists community, neighbors, our city, and the relationships that we develop.
This coming Sunday, at First Presbyterian Church, we will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion, along with fellow Christians around the world. “World Communion Sunday is a day when churches around the world have agreed to celebrate communion as a sign of our oneness in Jesus Christ. Not all traditions participate, but many do, and the day is a powerful reminder of our unity in Christ despite the theological, political, linguistic, and cultural differences in the church around the world.” (Heather Prince Doss, The Presbyterian Outlook)
Along with Communion, this Sunday at First Pres, we will continue our series on the parables depicted in the windows of our worship space. The fourth window depicts the parable of the net. According to the parable, God’s kingdom will gather together all people and sort them at the end of all time. Are some people “wicked” and others “righteous”? How does this language impact our understanding of faith and community? Does affect the way you live your life? Does it give you hope and assurance? Fear? Motivation to share the good news? As a community, let’s gather to hear God’s word together and celebrate around the table, as Jesus our host, invites everyone: “Come, taste and see.”
Blessings on your week.
Very truly,
Pastor Adam
